1. What is the content of the training they are being provided with? Plumbing training programmes provide prisoners with the opportunity to develop key skills and qualifications in plumbing through the partnerships between Corrections, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and Waikato Institute of Technology (WinTec) to provide Trade and Technical Training courses in Plumbing at Christchurch Men's Prison (CMP) and Spring Hill Corrections Facility (SHCF) respectively. Course content covers:

? Worksite safety and first aid ? Working with hand and power tools

? Trade calculations and measurements

? Sketching plumbing installations ? Providing customer service

? Welding and brazing

? Excavation

? Working with metal and PVC piping

A short extension course is offered at both locations offering further training for successful graduates in further drain laying and roofing skill sets.





I remember when we were at tech that EVERYONE had to have a current training agrement with there employer and be in a formal apprentiship to be allowed to be at tech for the block courses i remember a few even being kicked off because they had NO CURRENT EMPLOYER!!!!...and now we see these prisoners who have NO FORMAL APPRENTISHIP and NO TRAINING AGREEMENT with any employer being given knowledge that i fricken had to pay and work for!!!!...WTF is happening when some people who are clearly not under any formal training agreement getting FORMAL TRANING and i see my mate who has just lost his job a week before the course starts getting asked to leave unless he finds an employer and enters into a formal traning agreement...f**** ill just sit here and ram my head aghinst a brick wall and see if i can bash myself stupid so i can bring myself down to the stupidity of there level and see if i can understand why honest young blokes are getting kicked out of tech because they dont have a formal traning agreement with an employer most proablies going on to lead a life of crime!!! while some idiot criminal gets a free ticket to our trade!!!!!
I say bring back the BIFF cus those pr**ks need some sense knocked in to em!

Hi Thunder,

While I understand what you are saying. I think you will find that the prisoners are doing an introductory course to the plumbing trade and not an apprenticeship type training. I accept that this can cost the average person + $5000 and it is not fair to any young person who wishes come into the industry through an introductory course. I think it is good that they are trying to rehabilitate these people, perhaps they could have a repayment regime once these people have been released and in employment, perhaps not, I really don't know.
I know there is a lot of anger out there within the industry and things need to be sorted out big time.

Check out the Federation newsletter - you will see that a letter was written to Corrections asking them these exact questions and they have answered pretty honestly.  I think what is probably frustrating for everyone is that you have had to pay for any sort of pre-trade - and yet you are paying for criminals to get the same training through your taxes.  It will be interesting to see how many of these guys manage to pick up work - with programmes like Target and the like customers are becoming more and more aware of the people they have in their homes.  As an employer would I be willing to hire an ex con who had served their time and done a course like this - in all honesty probably not because I wouldn't want to take the risk they could re-offend in any way in any of my customer's homes.  If work was flat out, and apprentices hard to get (not likely to happen in the next few years) - then would I re-consider - I might, but again the risk is large.  More than likely they might be employed by some of the bigger firms that could come from overseas.  Then the question will be whose ticket are they working under.  The reasoning was to help prepare for the great shortage everyone talks about when Chch takes off.  I'm not convinced.  If you are really pissed off Thunder then you should write to your MP, and John Key and while you're at it send Williamson a piece of your mind.

I don't know why they didn't train them to be lawyers, then perhaps the PGDB might have been able to employ them to add to the gaggle of lawyers they already have

the most dangerous people are those with enough knowledge to blag and convince others they know what they are doing....luckily it is being provided to people who respect the law of the land...oops, what a train wreck in slo mo.........

I wonder if they are going to do a locksmiths pre trade....not a good idea because you need to be trustworthy and it gives you access to people's homes....hhhmmm

I am disgusted that young kids who want a chance at an apprenticeship are sacked because of no employer contract, they are saying it is about rehabilitation.....but it only comes about after the second largest insurance costing disaster on record......so its not about cheap labour then, but doing the right thing and offering help to these people...what bollox.

And if you voice your disapproval its because your not prepared to give the convicts a second chance, nice spin ya conniving twats......

this country is insane. who knew going out and stabbing someone in 1998 for example, would take you places in 2012??

And who says crime doesnt pay.....its paying dividends for these motherf*ckers thats for sure. This country is so screwed up its beyond belief.

im not aghinst rehabilation but in the right places so often trades people are left alone in a strangers house and i know the temptation for these previous crims will be just to great and we will see out trades dragged into the gutter...Why dont they use common scense and train them in areas like machine operation in a big factory or packaging plant or how to hang live birds at a chicken processing plant a job which i have done very dirty (covered in chicken shit and piss lol)BUT an honest job ....my point is that they need to work in a team enviroment and in these places they will be surrounded by people and not be given the chance to commit crime as so often we trades people work either alone or with one other providing plenty of chances to get into trouble if your that way inclined....These people need to enter into society at the base level of traning not into highly skilled trades areas let them start in high supervision jobs like factory work and then if they wish to further there education then let them have to pay for it like every tom dick and harry has to...This country is so fkd up that we place more attention on the arsehole that has done the crime than the poor victims right to live a crime free life...we need to have a prision system like thailand one that is so god damb harsh that people are so shit scared that they dont commit crime in the first place...like when your dad/mum first smackes your arse when your a little kid geez it puts the fear of god into you but you know what... IT WORKS...you are highley unlikley to do it again!

And i couldnt see a single crim comming out of jail and working for minimum wage for 4 years as i did...lol how stupid is the govt!
