Hi guys,
I'm not a registered gasfitter, but just a regular joe with a mechanical engineering degree. I'm building a new kitchen, and want to install a 4-burner gas hob. At a previous house, there was a gas hob supplied from a 9kg bbq bottle outside, and I'd like to do the same here.
Wondering what the regulations were regarding doing the pipework and installation myself, I discovered NZS5261 (which I haven't read) and this publication from Christchurch City Council: http://resources.ccc.govt.nz/files/GuidelinesForResidentialLPG-docs.pdf (http://resources.ccc.govt.nz/files/GuidelinesForResidentialLPG-docs.pdf)
It tends to indicate that I am legally allowed to perform the installation myself, and I don't need a certificate from a certified gasfitter, because I'm dealing with a supply of under 15kg.
Can someone who has read NZS5261 verify this? Or is it a load of a$$?
BTW, I'm more than happy to get a certified gasfitter to do the work, if thats the law.

The above doc recommends that you get a licenced gas fitter to install you hob and this is a very wise call as he will know all the regulations that need to be adhered to.
It is not necessary to certify a 9kg installation but in the event of a accident or fire how do you prove to your insurance company that the hob was installed to the current standards? No proof no payout!!

Hi there.
Clearly states only gas installations can be carried out by a person authorised under PGD act.
Clearly states what is a gas installation in the regs. 2010.
In a nutshell only a certifying, licensed or an exemption cert. person can do that work........ it just doesn't need certification if the install is supplied by a 15kg or less lpg cylinder.

Basically.
Plumbers, gasfitters and Drainlayers act 2006, Gas act 1992- these are act of parliament --Law
Gas(safety and measurement) regulations 2010----------- law
these documents will give you definitions and requirements on who can do what
NZS 5261 is a standard- and although Part 1 of the standard is mandatory, the rest is a way of doing things
This standard tells how, what etc how a gas installation or part must perform.etc, etc, not who can do it.
Come next week. NZS 5261 will be an alternative solution and a new standard will be cited as the norm.
To sum up, like every ones else has mentioned.
GET A CURRENT CERTIFYING GASFITTER to do the job.
You will find many fine tradespersons on this site. just log into the plumbing directory.

Cool, so the Standards define what SHOULD be done, and the Act enforces it.
Yeah, I'll get the gas man in. It should be a simple/quick job.

im pretty sure anyone who isn't licenced is NOT allowed to even install the pipe.....LICENCED GASFITTERS ONLY!!!

hi guys, Roberto it`s not a gas pipe until gas or an appliance is connected to it, so the reality is that anyone could install the pipe but when the gasfitter connects it he then certifies that it is to code and safe,cheers
