Fellow Practitioner (Mac Mcivor)
« on: March 28, 2014, 12:36:14 PM »
hi guys, a true gentleman in our trades. I was audited twice by Mac in the `good old days` very thorough and helpful, when i completed gas points training by correspondence with the open polytec Mac was the helpful person at the other end, thanks Mac. When people like Mac are driven to criticise the Board you know that` all is not well` with the organisation, cheers

The board's legacy of "its not cost effective to give advice".........more money in f****in people over....

I have heard Mac's name  mentioned by colleagues with 40+ years in the industry. He is held in high regard for his knowledge and willingness to help.
Mac's letter to the editor  in The fellow Practitioner is very timely with re-licencing now upon us.

It is people like Mac that with their long time in the trade and ability to communicate and share knowledge  are those who should be consulted for their  industry experience.
Experience is something you cant learn from a book, the real crime is is not valuing it and  not building on it.

All the best for your retirement Mac .

Mac McIvor has helped many a young, and not so young gasfitter out over the years.  He has always taken the time to explain an issue and to talk it through with gasfitters.  If you had a question about a job that you weren't too sure about - i.e. perhaps it was outside the box, or not straight forward - you could always ring Mac and run it past him.  These were the days when the Board tried to keep gasfitters out of trouble, not wait until they had done the job and then slap them over the head with it.

Mac is a gentleman and a scholar.  He had a fine library of every installation manual of every type of gas heater ever produced or bought in to NZ.  He knows more than a thing or two about this trade and the people working in it.  He was shafted from his job at the PGDB by a former CEO and the Board was never the same again.  Mac, Mike Guest, Wally Weaver - these people understood what the trade meant, they understood that 99% of gasfitters actually want to do it right, and they helped them.  Wally said that they were the ambulance at the top of the cliff, and way back before there was any danger of falling.

What a refreshing attitude to have - and certainly far different from the Board of today.  Yet, you have to ask yourself, was there outbreaks of dodgy gasfitting during this period - no there was not.   Thanks Mac for everything you have done, and for everything you stood for.
