Fellow Practitioner Issue 209 Dated 6 June 2014
« on: June 06, 2014, 06:24:49 AM »

Last week the Auditor General Follow Up Report was released. Was it a glowing report – we don’t believe so. Did you notice “partly complete” appeared twice, that “concerns” appeared 19 times, but the word “however” which is generally the precursor to other not so good news, appeared 27 times. Try doing a search for “excellent” or “very good” and you will find they don’t appear.

There have been all types of claims over numbers in the industry. We, the Federation, claim they are decreasing and the Board are claiming they are increasing, so here is a bit of independent data from MBIE who advise the Minister on all things plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying.

Master Plumbers representative was heard to say at a recent meeting that he didn’t care if people left the industry as it just left more work for him.

This is the fundamental problem, those in a position of power benefit from the decline of the business opposition............

Like the goon (MP association president), son in law of an ex Board member, who phoned Wal and threatened him to "watch what horses he backed", after Wal helped me with my kangaroo court. He could have done it in person the night before.

It shows the attitude of these people, all this bullshit is good for business for them......the more of us that say this ain't worth it....is just money in their pockets.

And now they lead the Board.....
You can't choose who you are.....but you are the sum of your choices.......

How far does the corruption go?  All we have seen in the last twelve months is coverups of the Boards incompetence. First Williamson who was discredited, supported by John Bank's vote and now we have the Office of the Auditor General bailing on the industry and saying all is well. Its as if all they wanted to do was get the Board off their books.

Whats the new Minister Nick Smith doing? Is he just going to leave us until after the election after all Parliament closes for the elections in early August.  That will probably be the next excuse we get hit with. I can see why people are getting pissed off and operating illegally. Forced into illegal activity by the Government. It sucks.

I quite often heard that line said by my old boss about if there's a shortage of tradesman he'll make more money and yes he was part the same organization, all there after is lining there pockets and sod the consequences, why do you think they used to make the exams as hard as possible.

Money the root of all evil. Because of the so called history of doing good for the industry Master Plumbers as an organisation has positioned its self and some of it's members in very comfortable positions within the industry and we as an industry have no one to blame but ourselves because no one has taken the time to step up until, the Federation arrived, and even now a huge percentage of the industry is just sitting back doing nothing.

What pisses me off is the Boards are dominated by Master Plumbers members but most are failing. Look at the Old ITO (Fail) look at the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (Fail) look at Plumbers Merchants (Fail) and look at Master Plumbers Society (Fail). All of these boards affect what we do.  We seem to be stuck in a big washing machine going round and round in our own dirty water.

It people don't step up we will go no where. Look at it that the Board has just spent the last four years ($16 million in fees etc) just to get us where we should have been 4 years ago but with no improvement. Look at the new ITO who have been with us for a couple of years but nothing has improved. Everyone needs to hold these people accountable.

I feel sorry for the Federation who have been working their butts off for the industry and to get improvement and only get supported by a fraction of the industry. The rest that are doing nothing are just hanging them out to dry instead of supporting them.

Yep Watchdog there is a lot of truth in what you say but there are also a lot of grass roots members of Master Plumbers who are not happy as well and they have been letting their organisation know.

The Federation has always been of the opinion that most in the industry are heading in the same direction and there will be common ground, even with the Board but because of historical positions in the industry other organisations don't want to meet with the Federation. It would seem they feel threatened by the Federation.

I look at the Members of the Federation who are also Master Plumbers members. They have the chosen to stay with Master Plumbers for the branding or whatever but have also chosen the Federation to help make improvement. These people are looking further than who has more members, or who has the most influence, or who can make the most money etc.

The industry is so small that personalities come into the fray and I know that as the Chairman of the Federation I'm disliked because of the tactics used, because the Federation holds people accountable and I also know a lot of false information is spread about me and the Federation in an attempt to make us look bad.

Look at it this way would it be any different if we had a different chairperson or a different organisation, no it wouldn't be because the people we are holding accountable just think they are better than everyone else and don't like being proven wrong. They are the ones who are responsible for the demise of the industry not the groups trying to get change.

Wal you are dead right in what you say.  There are those who hold positions in this industry that try to discredit you and the other Federation executive so that they can downplay the influence the Federation has.  They question the membership - and the most insulting comment that has done the rounds is that the Federation is three or four members.  That's a lot of work that is done for three or four people!!  These same people can't get their head around an organisation that doesn't bleed its members for cash, but lets them make a donation as they can afford it.  The reason it can do this that people like yourself are donating hundreds and hundreds of hours of personal time.

The OAG report has been disheartening - it doesn't hold the Board to account at all - the recent newsletter was brilliant in listing the issues that are still outstanding, but I believe the OAG office wanted this report off their books.  In fairness the PGDB have done some of the things suggested, but there is more not done well, than done well.

Up until the Federation came to being there was no one holding people to account.  Wal you are doing a magnificent job - as are your team.  We all need to now stand up and be counted.
