Many feel the way you do, lets face it. Study is hard work! Fact of the matter is, theory will help you understand many things you out in the field! I think you need to motivate yourself, ask yourself this question. Why do I want to become a plumber? the money? love the job? Pear pressure? Only you can answer that question. Your motive is the key. Once your clear about that any study method will work magic! We can offer help through our forum and very soon I will make two hours a week available on the chat to answer questions live. I hope you will find plumbers.co.nz helpfull and look forward to hearing you have passed you exam successfully!
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

hi plumber, i`m sure all who join Plumbers.co.nz will find it usefull, we need it to share views. i agree with your post,Study is hard work, but lets look at your questions: Why do i want to become a plumber, can you remember? i can`t, love the job, sometimes, Pear pressure! never been under pressure from Pears, too many beers maybe but never pears, lol.
Yes study, if up and come`ers think study is hard now, wait till they get qualified.Under the present system of competence based training for gas fitters(soon to be for plumbers too) earning those 16 points(20 for two licences) is not straightforward, I have done it since i`ts introduction. To go to training sessions in work hrs is costly in lost wages,i did that for awhile,i have since opted for distance training from the open polytec which is not cheap, about $300 to get the 16 points, then you have to complete the exercises which are not over difficult but are still very time consuming and always ongoing, plumbers have not experienced this points training yet so are in for a shock. Master plumbers run courses but are not cheap even if you are a member (about$700 per yr) and are outside work hours, so if you are not prepared to do the study best look at the first question,a lot of us did not have the opportunity to decide, we did not know that after many years in the trade we would have to go back to school every year as a prerequisite to be able to work in the industry, what would we have done if we had known???? Happy Plumbing. ???

Hi Robbo

My parents gave me two options as a teenager. If you want our support you either do your trade or you leave home and support yourself. Very old fashioned they felt that every man should have a trade before he leaves home and decides what to do with the rest of his life. I hated them for pressuring me into it the way they did. The plumber I did my apprenticeship with was very racist and violent (my parents found the job for me  >:() even had spanners thrown at me because I grabbed the wrong tool. It was a very hard, long and dry apprenticeship and Ill never forget the day it finished!! :D As soon as I had finished my apprenticeship I left the trade (and home) and did IT (programming) for many years. IT eventually slowed down and very soon I was looking for a job again. Thanks to my parents I had plumbing to fall back on, now many years later I enjoy plumbing more then anything else I have done in the past. I enjoy it because I'm good at it and know much about it. I'm now trying to help as many young plumbers as possible to feel the same way I do. Good plumbers are those who enjoy plumbing. Institutes that govern plumbing/gasfitting here in NZ are not doing a very good job in protecting or supporting our trade to make everyone feel that way. Please don't let them ruin your trade for you.  :-\
