So I passed my rego last year and I'm now getting ready to sit my craftsman (the new exam has been joint 9194/9195).

I have been on the PGDB website as Jose has told me to check out under "Examinations" to find all the relevant material...

Well... I have just downloaded all the Legislation, Standards and Codes of Practice.

The following have been specified by the board as being relevant to the exam:

Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006

Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Regulations 2010

The Building Act 2004

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992

Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995

Health Act 1956 Part 2A (Drinking Water) amended 2007

New Zealand Building Code and Handbook (available from www.dbh.govt.nz)

The question I have is, what out of the Building Code should I be focusing on as it is absolutely huge...

If anyone can help me out whos been through this intimidating part of the process before, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Rosco

probably as a minimun you should be reading the following
 G1, G2, G4, G10-G13
H1, B2 and E1-E3 These cover the majority of plumbing associated codes but you should familarise yourself with most codes especcially where it details nogging and running pipework through timber framing.

Cheers for quick reply.

Sounds pretty similar to what other people have told me.

Now just to print EVERYTHING off!  :P

I heard about the open polytecnic books the other day..

Someone said they were $400 odd so I rang the polytec to confirm / find out names of books, spoke to 4 or 5 people but couldnt get through to plumbing dept. and know one knew what I was talking about, even from the library.

A mate said there is 8-10 of them and said he would sell brand spankers for $200 and that they were what made him pass.

Anyone have any info?

Cheers in advance!

you can still get them as far as I am aware - not sure that i'm willing to let mine go as my boys use them - maybe i could loan them to you?!?

this course was most useful for the common paper, but as that has been discontinued im not sure how much will be incorporated into the main exam

Cheers Integrated,

I think I'll just borrow my mates one so I can scribble in them.

Is that 9195 course still relevant with the recent combining of the exams change?

If yes, is it night school and how was it?

Cheers Rosky

Hi Rosco,

The papers I have are open polytech papers first published in 2006 - so most of everything will be relevant excepting the latest legislative changes - the theories remain the same as I suspect they always have done and will do

When I got this it was all on me to work through it - there were supposed to be study groups for various regions but it never eventuated, I suspect I was the only one bothering with this in my region (southland) at the time...   so it was basically just myself working through each paper after hours using the courses as study towards the exams - probably took 3-6months going through them start to finish - I didnt bother sending them in for assessment because at the end of the day the exams were the bit that counted - I comfortably passed them so I think they helped

I would ring them and ask if the course has been revised/re-published to suit the new exam format

I would imagine that cert gas and cert plumbing will take on bits and pieces of the common - someone else may know more - perhaps contact the board?

If you have access to your mates then i would definitely recommend you borrow his as it is quite a cost just for study purposes - but worth it IMO...

best of luck which ever way you go!!

Cheers, Int.

Thanks for the advice dude, I will probably get the books, go through them all and familiarise myself with all the codes and regs. Trying to minimise cost. That's pretty much what I did with the rego except I used the Branz book for g12 and 13. I'll let you know how it goes if I sit it this november, could be next july though depending on how hard I can hit it.

Hi Rosco, Im sitting 9195 Plumbing this June. I got registered in 08 so thought it was about time I have a crack so im moving forward with my career.

Ive been focusing on everything listed in the examination guide and have also accumulated all of the resources/standards listed (yeah the printing is insane, I havnt even printed everything either, been through 5 Black Ink Cartridges)

I think studying to the topics listed and the exploded sub lists of the topics listed in the exam guide is the best prep I can do. Im making a point also of reading and becoming very familar with the documents to be supplied as the open book examination resources so I can navigate my way through them quickly and effectively being as we will be on the clock and time management will be vital.

Nice one Rodza. I got my hands on some of the open poly assignment books which are exerts from all of these codes which are basically abbreviated study notes so I'm working my way through them to make sure I have at least a brief understanding of everything I might not know (mostly legislation), on the 5th book now and theres about 15 of them. I'll also familiarise with the full documentation later so I can find answers to the open book stuff quickly and efficiently. Then move onto old exams and revising. Im sitting mine in November, I just want to make sure I get it first time which is why I've started studying so early. Good Luck

What are other people using for study? I am finding the open poly books helpful but I don't think I have the full set and theres definately things missing that I need..

I have doyles and branz which are good for basics and the open poly book set I have is helpful but a little old. Does anyone know the best place to get all the info without having to soley rely on the full body of the acts and codes?

Cheers in advance!
