Heat Pump Hot Water Heater
« on: June 12, 2011, 08:57:49 PM »
Is it possible to import a heat pump hot water heater for use in my home and get it installed by a plumber or would this not meet regulations?

Why not just buy one from a plumbing store?

I did look into that and cost is the main factor.  To import cost would be $1000 to $2000 plus installation.  To purchase in NZ $$4,000 to $10,000 including installation?

Hi Peewee

You need to factor in costs of replacement parts and no warranty as well.  The plumber who installs it can't warranty the goods as you have supplied them - if parts etc are needed then this will be costly.  If you think long term then it might not be such a cheap deal.  Have you had a good look at say the Quantum stuff.  Not sure where in the country you live, but I'm sure if you look around it's worth paying a bit more up front to get the full warranty and peace of mind knowing that parts etc will be readily available if required.

Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you?  Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed the passage with you?  (Walt Whitman 1819-1891)  American Poet

An alternative is Aqua Fire heat pumps based in Auckland, Prices are great and you can claim the warranty in NZ if anything happens. Connect it to a basic 300L Hot water cylinder with the right ports and off you go! Send them plumbers.co.nz regards

Hi Jaxcat,
Ive just dealt with Quantum outdoor products for the first time, and they appear to be a great product; although a few grumbles I do have was the condition they arrived in still covered in swarf (see photos)
The last photo is the TPR valve socket after 2 months..
Cheers

Woody, I think it is well worth contacting Dave Noyer the National Sales Manager on 09 443 6354 - or dnoyer@quantumenergy.co.nz
He is very responsive to plumbers/gasfitters and is keen that practitiones are happy with their products.  Like all things recommendations are key to growing a business like this.

I would send him the photos too.  Like to hear how you get on.  We have dealt with them for about a year now - and although we haven't installed very many of their products I have watched how they operate in the market and so far have been pretty impressed with their integrity.  They are also more than willing to run information evenings at merchants or at your workshop for interested practioners.  Their warranties seem fairly genuine too.  Love to hear how you get on.

Yes we are talking with them, more so with the Oz division, unfortunately Dave moved on from the company a few weeks back.
Aside from these setbacks in my opinion they honestly are great units (commercial application, ive yet to see a domestic installation)
Cheers

Hi - Gosh interesting about Dave - he had been with them for a long time.  I think it is taking them a bit of time to get traction in the NZ market, at least South of the Bombays anyway.  Any idea where he has gone?

Hi,
Can you clarify whether if you import a hot water heat pump and/or hot water cylinder it is possible to legally have them installed in NZ-apart from the possible spare part issues? Is this also the same for solar hot water? I am talking about importing for own use not resale.

I would suggest talking with the plumber you intend to use - alot of the "cheap" stuff that is there for import is exactly that - "cheap"

As far as I am aware we can import whatever we wish to, that is why the NZ market is flooded with sup-par product - if it is manufactured in NZ then it must meet as/nzs

At the end of the day you get what you pay for - I would be checking that whatever is purchased is fit for intended use
