Hey Guys,

Does anyone in the forum have any experience working in Oz in the mines or have any helpful information/tips/contacts to help in getting a job there?

I am 24 and a NZ Certifying Plumber and Gas-fitter and a registered Drainlayer.

Thanks

One of my ex staff member's went over after his Drainlayer exams last year.  He was a licensed plumber, gasfitter and drainlayer (got his results in Jan this year) - he is on something like $55 per hour on wages - long days but if you are focussed and save you money then you can do well.  Don't know any other details except he comes back now and then for his days off and he is always smiling.  He's just a young fella - 22 - came to us on the Gateway programme and always a pretty focussed individual.  Good luck - not that we can afford to be losing our brightest and best...

I can't for the life of me understand how/why plumbers stay in this country.
With the huge fees they pay each year and the shit the plumbers board put you through ,especially with that arrogant prick U'ren running the show,
It must be a very satisifieing job to work in the PGDB office and a friendly office enviroment.

When Last enquired with BHP billiton HR they said that services of a plumber gas fitter wasn't something they needed as a mining trade but that they love to employ building trades people for there dedication and professionalism  . Hope that helps

Yeah you don't really need to go into the mines to get awesome cash, its generally the mining towns where your needed. They have no need for plumbers/gasfitters physically in the mines at all really, mostly drillers and shot operators. The money to be made is not in the big citys, its out in the small towns and communitys spread across oz but close to the mining districts where you'll find work and $$$. They do however like ''australian experienced'' trades people, its good to go and work for someone in say brissy or melbourne for a while to build yourself up and then go for the big bucks. Dont expect to go straight in as it WONT work out for you :D
