its a galvanised iron nipple, socket and nut. its for joining water pipes together so you can get water from one place to another so you can have a shower or take a dump.

hi guys, yes plumb no mystery here correctly known as a "connector" obviously not used now but can be seen in many older houses, cochez must be one of the new breed of plumbers, if he has got any sense he will get out before the going gets much tougher, cheers

Yes, its a long screw nipple.Could be used instead of a union joining fitting. Use to make them onsite back in the day.

Hi guys, the long thread is called a running thread, it would usually join on to the next pipe , which had a shorter thread called a backnut  thread. the socket is wound down the running thread onto the shorter backnut thread to join 2 pipes together. A grommet [hemp rolled as for a crox] would be placed between the socket and backnut. I used to use these a lot a lifetime ago!!! Maybe you can get cpd points for reading this, it seems perfect to get points on basically redundant technology which you will probably never use!!!! ;D

I remember years ago this was a question in an exam ie what is a long screw , some wise guy put down 30 minutes , dunno if he passed the exam . maybe the examiner had a sense of humour and gave him full marks lol
