Title: Is Solar Heating really worth it?
Post by: newguy on August 06, 2008, 06:56:06 PM
My wife and I are thinking about investing in a solar system to heat the water in our new house but I'm confused, there is so much out there and i don't know where to start. Pumped Systems, Thermo Systems, Direct Systems and then there is the vacuum tubes, Flat Panel and Sealed Solar Heaters? What should I choose? should i use an infinity as back up? How many months will the panels supply hot water? What roof am I allowed to have? Whats the difference to all the different manufactures? I hope you can help with a few of my questions to make the decision easier.

That's a lot of questions for a new guy..  ???  The difference between a pumped system and a Thermo system is that with a thermosyphon system your cylinder would be on the roof (over the panels) and no pump is required (gravity fed), no Cylinder in the house, no moving parts and most easy to install very often sold as a complete affordable package. with the pumped system obviously you have a pump that is installed near by the Cylinder which is not on the roof. This system allows for better control of the solar energy intake and has a smart controller option. There are many specialists in this field, I recommend you get as much information as possible before making a decision. If you require a contact in this area, Plumbers.co.nz have installers they recommend. Please email me your details at plumber(at)plumbers.co.nz and ill send you some info.

Solar is worth it , if you've got the dollars go solar with heat pump back up, at worst case scenario heat pump would be still way cheaper than running an electric back up.

Also direct into the HWC cylinder is way cheaper and more  efficient as you  don't have a heat exchange coil to worry about, less valveware too, and easier to set up.

In fact just finished an install with direct hook up plus wetback, goes good.

The Government offers a $1,000 grant towards the cost and there's now a website you can go to to get EECA approved systems and EECA registered installers. I recommend having a look and getting qualified advice on the approved systems available. They are also offering finance options, may be worth considering?

Solar hot water systems do not use grid electric power yet the system makes hot water. I know you will be happy when you see the first 3 months electric bill reduction. Electric hot water heaters use a lot of electric power. The one in my home has two 1,500 watt heating coils and a 60 gallon tank. A solar hot water heat uses no electric power and can make hot water for free. You decide. Free verses your electric bill.

These days you needn't replace your existing hot water cylinder either, if it is in good condition. You can retrofit solar to your existing cylinder and it will be as efficient as installing a complete new system.

I think it all depends on how much mullah you want to spend on the system
im just an apprentice but i am getting heaps of exp with solahart systems and what i have seen with them they are well worth the money, but how the boss explains it is 'it is only going to make the savings if you use the water solar has heated' so i guess these systems would only be useful in situations where a decent sized family is usuing the high volumes in the tanks
Ive been to houses to service the units and they have had the power off since late october and still have the power off til around now and are getting decent heatage out of their tank untill this late into the year.

questions like this always make me laugh...

each and every household is different...

the hot water system should be designed around the clients hot water NEEDS

in most cases solar will trump others, generally the only thing that beats solar is geo

most others are about on par with one another - I believe lpg has now been priced out of the market in terms of heating hot water unless low occupancy building use (ie 1-2 ppl)

i believe direct evac tube pumped systems with a GOOD controller to be best in terms of efficiency and performance

much of this is based on locale within the country also

it is foolish and naive to discount ANY particular heating medium without doing some basic calc's - in some cases the good old 100% efficient submerged element can come out on top in life-cycle costing...

food for thought...

I will always support solar Heating system as it is the best way to get hot water without wasting electricity and money and it is the best way to use our natural resource i.e Sun

Hi New Guy. Every situation is unique and you need an expert to analyse yours to see what best suits you. This would be the plumber - NOT the salesman, who has something to sell and won't tell you the bits that might put you off. Plumbers are never short of work - so they don't need to sell you anything and are much more likely to tell you what you need to know - specially if they are to install it. Mind you, you need to find a good one! I've just discovered that ours installed the safety air vent wrongly which accounts for why our solar was a total disaster - and has actually cost us money. (Long story) I like benson's boss's comment that you will only make savings if you use the water. Our info sheet actually says that the controller can tell you how much power you have saved, which is totally untrue - something I intend to use in the tribunal- I'm going to attempt to have the whole thing removed and get at least some of my money back.

Am I now anti solar? Not by any means. We didn't do our homework properly. You are going the right way newguy. Take your time - it's a lotta money if you get it wrong. You need to know how much your usage is likely to be. If you don't use a lot - think twice. And you need to look at ongoing costs and when to expect them and how to minimise them. And look at the guarantee before you sign up. The pump isn't covered against running dry? How could it do that? Believe it - it can! And the controller isn't covered against power surges? So are you likely to get 'em? Is the surge protector included in the quote? And do you know you will be removed from the ripple system and be paying full price for any power you do actually use? Talking about quotes - what items are excluded? You might need to know what they are. And finally - know that it is your responsibility to send in the form to get the Code of Compliance, so don't go filing all the paper work until you've got it in your hot little hand!

Good luck.

It can provide almost all of your hot water during the summer months and about 50% year round
reduces your impact on the environment - the average domestic system reduces carbon dioxide emissions by around 400kg per year, depending on the fuel replaced. It could cut your bills and you dont have to worry about parts etc. There are plenty of systems now available.

I guess that solar heating is really worth it. It is so because during cold days we generally use geysers and it has a resistance coil inside it and it has a high resistance capacity and hence, it consumes a lot of electricity. If we use solar heaters, then we can same electricity and our monthly bills will also  get reduced.
