When Hastings was first chlorinated heaps of cylinders went there. They found that the chlorine was cleaning out the pipe work and Hot Water Cylinders, which was causing the leaks. The councils network sprung a lot of leaks also, city care were kept busy digging up the roads to carry out the repairs

had that happen here 3 years ago when the council "upgraded the water treatment plant"
100s of hot water cylinders aged from 4 years to 40 years all started to leak from pin holes,
cut a cylinder open and the copper sulfate crystals had eaten clean through the copper bottom.
i did some on line research and all info pointed to a increase in ph ( potential hydrogen) levels feeding the copper sulfate and they would grow and eat copper like it was ice cream :D :D :D :D :D
merchants where rubbing their hands together for nearly 2 years!
poor customers had no idea and council played the 3 moneys act  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
high ph plus water at or above 60c = copper sulfate grows like crazy
