Title: Munson rt hot water cylinder aka elephant cylinder.
Post by: Enn on January 10, 2017, 06:58:06 PM
Hi all just wondering if anyone remembers these cylinders.Attached a couple of pictures.
I have one where i work and after 38 years of faithful service i believe it is now kaput.
here is what is happening, the header/ expansion tank on the top of the cylinder is overflowing so i checked the ballcock and replaced the washer as it had almost gone, however still overflows so i have concluded that the coil in the cylinder has holed due to water coming into the header tank via the expansion pipe, does this make sense, age and the super dose of chlorine that is mandatory after the holiday break have finished it off.
I would like one of these for my plumbing artifacts collection.

All the best to you all for 2017.

Hi Enn, I actually have one in my "workshop museum". Great tanks at the time. I think you are spot on with your assumption that there is a hole in the heat exchanger.

Also wishing you a successful 2017!

Thank you plumber!
The Elephants are retired to the scrap pile ( spare parts store) and have been replace with a 300l mains pressure cylinder with quick recovery element & ring main connection.
It is working ok for now but i doubt it would be able to supply at  peak demand, not quite what i scoped for the job  but you have to work with what is supplied....
At least amenity has been restored and i have a few remaining sanity molecules left.. i think.
