Title: what's good water pressure coming from the street?
Post by: hattricknz on October 11, 2016, 08:58:41 AM
Hi there

What is good pressure to have coming from the street? Ours was abour 9bar and a plumber put on a PRV(pressure reducing valve) which got it down to 4/5bar.

Some backgorund. Plumber was around to do other work and offered this as a solution. but now the cold pressure in the sink is noticeably lower now and think I want it back to the old pressure or at least higher then what it is now.

Can anyone advise on good pressure to have coming in from street and what pressures should be at kitchen tap for example? what are the standards in NZ? Tried the BRANZ site there but not sure it that is the place to look. tks

Hi, most new installs pressure limiting valves which are preset to 500kpa and can be adjusted to the pressure that you like. A pressure reducing valve is used for low pressure hot water so will reduce the cold down to far if is put on the incoming mains. A limiting valve on the mains will be able to reduce the pressure to the required setting, cheers

this really depends on you're hot water cylinder/boiler and tapware - alot of cylinders and heating appliances dont like inlet pressures above 500kpa - 5bar - the same goes for tapware and both will be warranty void if going over stated operating pressures

900kpa - 9bar is way too high and not good for system longevity anyway - the plumber done the right thing
