Hi guys, it seems to me that there is no point going through the rigors and expense of becoming fully qualified only to be held responsible for others work. It seems that a great deal of our work is carried out by `exempted` unqualified workers presumably employed as cheap labour, and to claim that all these workers are `supervised` is pure nonsense. In my opinion there is a lot of unseen and sub-standard work that may or may not have been supervised and signed off where necessary by a fully qualified tradesman who is responsible for the work if it goes wrong. i believe that these catorgories should be scrapped, cheers

This is the highest qualification available. These people are responsible for ensuring both their own work, and the work of anyone they supervise is done competently.

Licensed plumber
These people are qualified and licensed but must be supervised by a certifying person who is ultimately responsible for ensuring the work is done competently.

These are people who are working towards becoming qualified. They can do the work but a certifying person must ensure it is done competently.

Exemption for plumbing under supervision
Exemptions
These people are not registered and don't have a full qualification, but they can do plumbing work provided they are supervised by a certifying person, who must ensure that the work is done competently.

Hi Robbo

You quite right Robbo. Have a look at this weeks Fellow Practitioner and you will see that exemption numbers are way up and authorisations issued to qualified people are down but the Board claims an 8% increase on last years authorisations.  If you were to add all the other people doing their own work you could claim a percentage increase in the thousands. Tradespeople need to start sticking up for themselves before their livelihoods are pulled out from under them.

yep , points back to the views of a lot of people in the industry . If you complete a 4000 hour apprenticeship , sit & pass trade certificate , apply & accepted to be on the register then you should be able to be responsible for your own work . There are still safety nets in place , certs , local body inspectors . Nope it all rests on certifiers . this madness must end!

Lets face facts.....

The Board are the strong arm of a certain group, run by this group for this group.....if you rock the boat they set these dogs on you, it is blatant, its all about control and the putting out of business of any competition while they hand out exemptions and full licenses to those with the contacts, while they prevent others (who are more than qualified) getting licenses..........and if you blow someone up, well they can make that disappear if your connected and frame someone who is innocent as a cover.

I know this to be true and it is so very wrong for the whole of NZ.

This should be distasteful to anyone with a modicum of ethics or compassion for the NZ public.

If they can do it to one and get away with it then they can do it to all.......
