Hi I have been thinking about plumbing as a new career but I am not sure if I would be able to live off an apprentice wage . Does any one know what an adult apprentice would likely earn?

depending on location in NZ start about $20/hr through to $30/hr once completed - not really worth it for the hassle the trade is these days
there are several other "trades" that pay about the same but without all the BS that goes with it

Have a read of my story mate, its on here link above, the trade is being screwed over by a select few who pretend they are here for the publics health.
My advice.... go train as a car mechanic and have no comebacks.
If you do plumbing you can be set up for nothing many many years later....a car mechanic can warrant a car one day and have its breaks fail the next.....then charge to fix the breaks....
Basically the trade needs fixing and I would give it a wide birth until its is fixed.....

yep don't wanna bring a downer but also crawling under houses & getting up & down ladders takes a toll on knees also braizing cocks up the eyesite & it seems for even the smallest job you need to bring in half your van . not of any use to you now but I started a adult apprentiship in 1986 on $8.00 p/h

A lot of it will depend on where you live - to be honest I don't think you will be paid any more as an "adult" than a younger apprentice - the costs to the employer are the same. It is a good career and can lead you down many different paths. You will probably become more valuable to your employer quicker if you are an adult apprentice as you are likely to be more reliable than some of the younger ones - usually it all depends on attitude, passion and application. The starting wage for most apprentices is the minimum wage, and there are costs - the apprenticeship cost will be deducted weekly by SKILLS on an automatic payment, you will need a trainee licence each year (currently SKILLS organisation pays for that) at the completion of your apprenticeship you need to sit registration exams in the trades you trained in at $400 a pop and then first time registration for each trade is aROUND $1100.
