The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) has appointed Martin Sawyers as its new Chief Executive and Registrar.

Mr Sawyers is currently the Manager of Corporate Services for the Real Estate Agents Authority and will take up his role with the Board on 15 June.

PGDB Chair, Peter Jackson says; “ Martin stood out from other high calibre applicants because of his relevant knowledge and experience and he impressed the Board with his pragmatic attitude to occupational regulation.”

“I am confident that Martin will relate well to stakeholders in the plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying industries and that he will be a real asset to the Board.”

Mr Sawyers governance experience includes a term as Mayor of Buller and eight years as Chair of Buller Electricity Ltd. Prior to his current role with the Real Estate Agents Authority he was the Manager of Legal Operations with the Department of Corrections.

“We are lucky to get someone with Martin’s mix of skills and experience to lead the future development and direction of the PGDB, and we look forward to welcoming him to his new role,” says Mr Jackson

hi guys, so we have another Lawyer on the Board, cheers
...
Martin was raised in Reefton on the West Coast of the South Island and graduated from Canterbury University in 1989 with an LLB.  He first practised in Hastings before returning, in 1992, to Westport where he joined Coltrell Lovell, a local legal firm.
In Westport, Martin built up a general practice, acting for a broad spectrum of rural, urban and commercial clients.
Martin took an interest in public affairs and he has just finished a term as the mayor of the Buller District Council, where he oversaw huge reinvestment in community infrastructure and facilities.
Martin also has extensive public governance experience having held directorships in the electricity and telecommunication transmission sectors and having served as an inaugural trustee of West Coast Development Trust.  Martin is currently deputy chairman of Timberlands West Coast Limited, a state-owned enterprise.
Martin moved to Wellington for the educational, career and lifestyle opportunities it offers his family.  At Hayman Lawyers, he will be specialising in commercial and property law, franchising and asset protection.
Martin and Michelle have six children and Martin spends his spare time with his family, working out at the gym (boxing for exercise, not combat) and reading.
