Question 5 a)

1) NZS 3500 = 450mm
2) NZS 3500 = 600mm
3) NZS 3500 = 1:120
4) NZS 3500 = 1:200
5) NZS 3500 = 10 metres
6) NZS 3500 = 2 metres

5 b)

1. The excavation is more than 1.5 deep and is deeper than it is wide at the top
2. Workers are required to work underground in a tunnel or drive, irrespective of timber or support
3. Explosives are to be used.

5 c)

1. Are spoil heaps being properly controlled and will they stay like this in wet weather?
2. Is the work properly fenced off and signed during the day?
3. Is access adequate without anyone having to jump across the trench?
4. Is the trench safe from exhaust gases from machines working in the trench or nearby?
5. Are the workers excavating and shoring the trench expirenced in this sort of work?
6. Does everyone know where the buried services are?
7. Is trench clear of workers while the spoil heap is being worked on?
8. Are saftey helmets available and being worn?
9. Are high visability vests and saftey boots available and being worn?
10. Is surface clear of plant, spoil heaps, materials etc for at least 600 mm from the edge of the excavation.
