hi guys, this from the first page titled:- TOO PUNITIVE. notice how the board quotes the PGD ACT when it suits, cheers
-
I am sorry but I struggle with master plumbers magazine
they put in there what they want. bs that sides with pgdb all the time.
while a lot is very informative, it is still one sided, continually siding with them and there pathetic attempt at there interpretation of the act they are supposed to follow.

hi guys, bet the board would love this one (but i aint telling em) job i was on where the storm water was put in. I as a matter of interest asked the guy on the digger if he was a registered drain layer, he said that he didn't need to be cos all you need to do is get a registered guy to sign it off, (it gets better). Anyway job done and looking good i must say, i wasn't there when the inspection was done but inspector needs a signature, oh the guy hasn't got a ticket `bugger` what can be done? well inspector says there is a guy at the council who will sign it off for a bottle of whiskey, so i will keep you updated but having an alcoholic in high places seems to be the way to beat the system, cheers

haha good old NZ aye, seems to a growing problem. Were you annoyed robbo? I would have been a tad bothered lol
I have found that homeowners doing their own plumbing on their homes at some point in the homes history is becoming the standard in nz. I think I come across a new example every second week where drainage and plumbing has been done at some point by done by the homeowner themselves ( I can usually tell by the way the work has been done and the fact mitre10 price stickers are usually still on the push fit pipe, fittings, wastepipe/fittings, drainage fittings etc. most usually tell me if I ask, that they did this or that themselves in the past etc. Some volunteer the information and are proud of their past achievements.I have not come across anything dangerous but usually the plumbing/drainage wont comply for various reasons like lack of a terminal vent in the required position or any terminal vent at all, inadequate pipe support,no trap venting, over length waste or discharge pipes etc. I am usually on the job for unrelated reasons like to install a water softener etc, replace a gas heater/cylinder etc.
Mitre10 and bunnings promote DIY 24-7, failing to ever mention it is a breach of govt legislation to carry out your own plumbing/drainage work should their customers want to have a go with the fittings and fixtures they sell. I think at a management level they are fully aware of what can and cant be done legally but fail to mention it as to not turn off potential sales/customers.
In my opinion it is the catalyst reason why more and more people have a go, to cut costs of renovating and maintenance down. These big box merchants need to be held to account. Next they will be selling gas fittings/hoses etc and then its all on!! Once upon a time they never sold solid fuel burners or gas appliances but they are well and truly into that these days so why not a move into gas fittings? Only a matter of time I reckon. They stock everything electrical now days promoting DIY electricians to get out the scissors and pliers so a supply of gas fittings will be on the cards next... Store expansion through trade expansion is their goal, the more services they can offer through one roof the higher their turnover/profit goes.
In Manly,Sydney, when thew first bunnings opened up they crushed all hardware stores in a year to 18 months, leaving mitre10 as their only competitor., They opened a super bunnings nearby to the original bunnings store and crushed mitre10 as well as the original smaller bunnings in another 12 months forcing mitre10 out. Box stores need to dominate locally to turn profits due to being the cheapest around they have to move large volumes of stock,so they will push DIY until the cows come home to encourage the biggest market (public) to buy buy buy.
Will be writing to the board in regard to the correspondence i keep receiving in all shapes and forms saying i must play my part to inform the public about licenses and restricted work etc etc etc.
My question is what are the bunnings and mitre10 mega's doing to play their part? Anything? Cheers

hi guys, yes Rodza you come across it everyday, a couple of years ago i had to go to the small claims court to sort out a dispute with a customer where he claimed i had charged too much for some materials, blow me down if the lawyer overseeing the case agreed with me that some materials are quite expensive sighting his own experience of buying some pvc waste pipe when he had to do some plumbing of his own at home.
..Another case while at the doctors a couple of weeks ago, my doctor was telling me how he had to do some plumbing of his own on the weekend replacing his water tank in the roof as it had started to leak so he replaced it with a new plastic one, cheers

Two of the three Company Directors of Hot Water Shop Christchurch Ltd are Licensed gasfitters offering installation. I hope they have a CG on staff or bribe. They should know better than to sell this gear to the public.
-
hi guys, Wombles, what about the `supervision`cheers
-
its a becoming a real joke isn't it...I had two more instances yesterday.
-
I wonder what the outcome would be if any of us fitted that bosch heater in 15mm pipe and got audited on it. my bum hurts just thinking about it.
-
yea but joe blogs can do it and get away with a minimal fine at a local district court. The chances of some of these installations getting picked up are small to none. If it works etc and was safe but not compliant I would say the liklihood of these diy'ers getting picked up by the board is minimal.
If i ever come across rough gasfitting that I believe is diy, its a no go zone for me. not worth the risk unless the homeowner is prepared to have anything and everything that looks incorrect to be re-done at the time I am at the property.
-
hi guys, yeah Gordy i wondered about that 6mtrs of 15mm pipe, I've seen some piped in 15mm but it,s a no, no for us.
.. our trades have been taken over by bureaucrats and suppliers, there is nothing in it for us. The `Public` are not interested in all the `wiz bang` efforts of the board to rain in diy, ers, they are only interested in an economic (read cheap) job, so who will do the work? unlicensed or d.i.y.er, cheers
-
Its simple the board don't educate the homeowner that its illegal to do there own plumbing and gasfitting (they dont have the faintest Idea what marketing is, look at the show the card campaign and the mass amount of wasted money in that) then allow anyone to sell the product to Joe public then they can justify their levy and pick out the odd one to prosecute so they look like there doing something In sure with the amount the gather and use for prosecuting unlicensed plumbing in a year they could put together a great public awareness campaign as well as restrict sale of products to the public!!
-
Now that there is no central register of gas work, the Board has no need to spend money educating the public. There will be fewer prosecutions, thus more money in their pockets. With no central register what are the chances of being caught. Very slim. Even with the previous system the chance of an audit was slim even for those who were doing hundreds of jobs each year.

Hi Guys
watching the trial with mitre 10 in upper hutt very closely and it seems to been working quite well. if it spreads to other branches we need to support it there as well. it will only take a dozen or so pissed of plumbers in each town/city to move there accounts and the plumbing merchants arses should start to pucker up and realise that we have come to the end of our tether and had enough of them selling to the public.
You could even be proactive and ask at you local store if they know of the trial and are interested. Its worth a shot

How's this for wrong?
A person who has been prosecuted by the board as a member of the public for doing plumbing work and is know to all the suppliers in town as this person walks into the plumbing merchant buys a bathroom load of gear pays cash for it and casually chats to the guys that he is off to fit the stuff he has just bought ??? ???.
Where is the merchant responsibility >:( and/or conscience.
Any word on how Mitre 10 is going? Are they going to roll it out nationally?
