There has been talk by some supporters of the Federation that the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board should be renamed as it doesn’t really reflect their claim that they are a consumer protection board, not an industry board.
One supporter came up with EFBAS (Epic Failure Board and Secretariat) and we tend to agree. A couple of times now we have seen the Board gloat about the results of the satisfaction survey, but we would expect no less than excellent results for administrative tasks. It’s not that long ago that the Board operated with a Registrar and five to six staff.
Last year’s salaries expenditure was $1,358,231.00 up from $813,402.00 in 2008 - a $544,829.00 increase over 5 years!!!
In 2008 one person was paid over $100,000.00 being $190,000.00 – in 2013 we had FOUR people getting over $100,000.00 being about $110,000.00, $140,000.00, $150,000.00 and $230,000.00. So where are the improvements from this $630,000.00 spent on four people? The impression is an environment has been created where people are simply protecting high paying jobs at our expense. Compare these salaries to what you take home each week or fortnight, and what level of responsibility and accountability you have. It doesn’t seem fair does it?

Relicensing is in full swing and it is fantastic to see the large number of tradespeople who are getting in early to ensure that they are authorised to work lawfully on 1 April, which is the start of the new licensing year.
At the time of writing this, the number of people who have relicensed is more
than double the number who had done so at the same time last year - plus 124% to be precise. At the Board meeting next week, Minister for Building and Construction Maurice Williamson will be presenting the Centenary Youth Leadership Awards to three excellent young tradespeople. They were selected from the many high calibre nominations that were received for the awards. Details of the successful nominees will be released following the presentation.
The business plan for the next year will be adopted by the Board at that meeting and will be published on the website shortly after. There is a busy year ahead for the Board. It is pleasing to see that we are moving into a period of stability rather than the rapid change of recent years.
Inside this edition is information on enforcement action being undertaken by the Board to apprehend people who are working unlawfully. You can expect to see a lot more of this happening in the future. This work is both to promote public health and safety, and to rein¬force the value of the licence.
On the subject of the value of the licence, thanks to those tradespeople who have included the “ask for the card” message in material advertising their businesses. A good example is in this Info Brief (page 6), and more ideas from the industry to come for future editions. Building community recognition of the value of using trained and authorised tradespeople is the most effective way we can collectively fight against the illegal operators in our industry.

Hi Robbo Have a look at the maths. 4 people licensed this time last year double that gives you 8 and multiply by 124% and you get 10. The figures used mean nothing its the final figures that count. It would be a good article if you could believe them

What about the 60% of gas fitters that are still not registered with the ess web site????
Are we to believe that a maximum of 40 % of all gas fitters in New Zealand are doing high risk gas fitting? yeah right ???another Tui bill board. >:(

I can only imagine that people have not registered with ESS because the Board did not include in their info that this was required. Also it begs the question why haven't the unregistered been contacted. surely it wouldn't take long to cross check data bases.

The problem with peter jacksons speel is that they more or less consider all of us illegal operators and continually look for new ways to be able to point the finger at the common tradesman... were illegal operators if we b**** about the fees imposed and conditions that must be met, illegal operators if we dont pay the fees and protest, illegal operators if your a pgdf member, illegal illegal illegal. So what does that historically make the board then?

I know a few master plumbers businesses that do three trades but license for one or two a year to save $$$. Illegal operators? Maybe he should take a look at his own bloody bunch.
