Title: Loud gurgling noices in kitchen sink waste
Post by: Maleko on April 27, 2012, 07:38:53 PM
Hi,
We have an 11 yr old home and have been here 3 years.  In the past few nights there have been loud gurgling noises from the kitchen sink drain.  It would sound like air coming up through the waste pipe?
The noise is very loud and can be heard in post parts of the house.
The gurgling lasts only a few seconds and doesn't seem related to any other activity.  I.e. no one using the shower/laundry/dishwasher/etc at these times.  Tonight there have been three episodes of the noise.  The frequency of these noises is increasing.

Any advice on causes and solutions are very welcome.

Cheers - Mark

Hi Maleko, did you inspect the Overflow Relief Gully outside? Is it plastic or copper waste pipe (should be able see in the gully). Also have a look what runs into the gully just run your kitchen tap then look into the gully to see if water is coming through follow this process for all your fixtures. I could be your drain is slightly blocked or one of the waste pipes has a dip creating a trap.

Hi "Plumber" and "roberto",

Thanks for your replies.
I checked and cleared out the Gully and it all seems OK.
The waste pipe is about 40mm and the distance from the kitchen sink to the Gully is  almost 12 metres.
Fortunately, after about a week of gurgling - mainly in the evenings, the noises have now stopped and we've not heard anything for about 10 days.

Thanks.

Happy to hear the noise is gone Maleko. always a pleasure. If it comes back get a vented trap, 12 meters is very long for a 40mm pipe.

yeah isnt the dishwash drain hose "supposed" to be min 50mm above overflow level of sink to prevent backflow to dishwash if it floods as well?
