Can I please get basic advice re hooking up pipes to a pool ?
« on: December 03, 2014, 09:18:37 AM »
Hey all, I'm new here and I really need some advice. A while back, I purchased one of those Intex above ground pools with a metal frame and sand filter pump. It's mainly for my mum to use when she visits as she suffers with arthritis, but I really want to warm the water for her and that's where I need help.

I've been looking online at the various DIY solar heating systems and I reckon they would be ideal - except I'm not exactly a DIY genius..... Anyway, I've made some pipe coils from black irrigation piping and connected them together ( I've made three ) and now I need to hook them into the pump output before it goes back into the pool. My pool uses large bore pipes ( I reckon inch and a half ) so I could attach some additional PVC piping into the circuit. What I'm not sure about is how to attach the poly pipe to PVC. I did think about using garden hose to the poly pipe using a barb joint, but then I'm not sure how to connect the hose to the PVC - is it possible to get hose adapters for PVC pipe ??

I appreciate any thoughts and or advice on this, as it would mean a lot to provide some further comfort for my mum.

Cheers :-)

Hi and welcome to PNZ!

You can get adapters for pretty much anything these days, have you been to a plumbing merchant yet? I know for a fact that many solarheating companies out there have second hand or semi damaged pool panels they usually flick off for a few dollars. It might be worth your while ringing around. In your case one panel would be sufficient to look after that pool. It would save you a lot of time and give you a higher heat output to keep that pool warm for your mum. Alternatively just run a hose from your hot water tap when your mum is around for visit :)
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

Thanks for the welcome and tips mate, much appreciated. I haven't found a plumbing merchant yet, can you recommend one in Hamilton ? The idea about second hand solar panels is interesting, I'll check that out for sure. I think connecting the hose to the hot water tap not going to cut it though - the pool is 16' x 4' and contains nearly 20000 litres of water :-)

Cheers

Yes that's a lot of hot water  8). In Hamilton you can look up Mico Plumbing or Plumbing World. All the best with your project! We look forward to seeing some pictures once you get it up and running.  :)
