UK Plumber/GasFitter needs advice!
« on: December 24, 2012, 06:08:37 AM »
Hi everyone.
So - Ive registered with the PGDB who have approved my Quals to Level 4 & to continue with gaining a provisional license so I can work supervised.
Im at the point now of needing to sit the exams to get fully licensed so I can work alone. My problem is I dont know enough of the NZ Regs so it would be crazy to sit them right now. I could read ALL the books but I learn much quicker hands on.
I cant get a Work Visa as I dont have a job offer & I cant get a job as I dont have a Work Visa! Catch 22 !!!

What I'd like to do is work for a company in the Wairarapa that would give me on the job training until I was ready to sit the exams.
Am I hoping for too much & being unrealistic?
Ive visited NZ numerous times & have friends in Masterton hence my choice of the Wairarapa/Wellington area.

Its just me,no family, so Im in a good position financially which I need to be as Im aware of the up & coming costs!

I'd appreciate anyones advice & suggestions.
Thank you.

Gav.

Hi Gaven, I think your view is very good and realistic. Its good to get the "hands on" Kiwi experience before sitting your exam. Make sure you sit the refresher courses offered by several training institutes before sitting any exam. All the best with your endeavours.
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

Seasons Greetings! Thanks for your reply. A refresher course is definately a good idea!
Am I being unrealistic though with hoping for a company to employ me just to train me the Kiwi way? I mean why would they when there are plenty of fully qualified Kiwi/UK trades already looking for work? Out of interest is my experience & work background of any value there & do you know of any companies that could/would consider me? TradeMe/Seek advertisers etc all want Certified,Work Visas already & or Residency. Its difficult doing things from here in the UK but I cant get the right Visa unless I get a job!
