Dear MPGD Member
Re: Auckland MPGD Association future
You may be aware that last night, a group of Auckland members met and claimed to make a
resolution on behalf to the Auckland Association to leave the Society and set up a new Auckland
Plumbers Society in Auckland.
The Board of the Society is disappointed by these events and frustrated that our attempts at direct
and open dialogue with members have been rejected by the executive.
We strongly believe in the value of a unified national voice for our industry and the real benefits
national sponsorships and promotion of our brand bring to members across the country. We work
hard to benefit all members across the country rather than advancing the interests of one region
over others.
We would like to reassure all members of the Auckland Association that you still remain members of
the Society for now and can continue to use the Master Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers brand
and other member benefits.
We have enclosed a letter we sent to the Auckland Association President yesterday which explains
our position on draft proposals discussed at last night’s meeting. We had been assured that our
letter would be read out to those present but it wasn’t so we enclose it so all members have an
opportunity to consider it.
It is too early to say where these events may lead but in the meantime we want to assure all
members that your Society is here for you.
If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Yours sincerely,
John Leen
Board Chairman, Master Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers, NZ, INC

I would love to post the letter addressed to Chris Heley but apparently its not for "non-members and third parties" Whats your thoughts?

Very interesting... I can't understand what the Auckland guys are shitty about.  The information our association got about the marketing proposals, conference changes etc all seemed very sensible and the new CEO seems really open to discussing ideas - a huge change from the previous CEO and a massive breath of fresh air.  How widely did the Auckland Exec send all the information about the proposals that went to the half yearly - and how much engagement do they get from the members at large.  There is a real danger in leaving 6 or 7 people to make all the decisions because you can end up with the clowns running the circus.

I don't know the ins and outs of Auckland - but I do think somewhere their ideas of what is proposed are pretty f++ked up - individual Auckland members should go direct to the horse's mouth to here what is going on - it might surprise them how forward thinking Society has become.  The proposals will benefit individual members hugely - associations as an entity maybe less so, but isn't that what it is all about - advancing the cause nationally.  For instance the marketing proposal is something members have been calling for year after year after year and the proposals about facebook and social media were pretty good - this will benefit EVERY master plumber from Kerekeri to Bluff - and all for withholding 10% of Association fees.  I understand it will be earmarked for marketing specifically - well from my point of view it's been bloody well overdue and a great idea.

I guess the risk is MP loose a third of their members nationally if Auckland pull away - PROVIDING the individual members in Auckland actually support their Association doing this - and somehow I don't think that is the case.

Perhaps MP could take a leaf out of the Federation book - have chapters that simply are geographic meeting areas and don't have treasurer's, secretaries etc and no costs other than user pays - it definitely means you don't get regional bias.  Looking forward to reading other's opinions.

By the way Plumber - did you attend the meeting they speak of?
Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you?  Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed the passage with you?  (Walt Whitman 1819-1891)  American Poet

HI Jaxcat, I never received an invitation (yes im a member). And to be honest even if I would have I dont think I would have attended. I went to a few of these and every time it seemed that only the "old boys" knew what was actually going on and after all the "what did you have for breakfast" chit-chat I was completely lost, bored and tired. these meetings are usually held in the evening and after a loooong day of hard work the last thing you want to hear is all the winging and complaining. Another thing I didn't like was that the top members seemed to be using their position to benefit their own businesses. I have lost my faith in some individuals :(. Now members within the MPGD have decided to take independent actions refusing open dialog with the existing association disregarding how this may reflect on the association as a whole. Like you say Jaxcat, the MP should be advancing the "cause" meaning ONE cause nationally but it seems here in Auckland things always tend to operate differently. I think Auckland needs to be split up into several groups allowing more people to become actively involved. I'm all for what Greg Wallace is proposing and believe its about time the public is educated about what MP is all about, which will ultimately hopefully benefit us the members..

Seems pretty short sighted not to invite all the members who could be affected by the decisions.  Is that even legal?  Associations all have rules and at a minimum they would have to be followed, as would Society's rules.  I agree with you Greg Wallace has some real vision to take this organisation ahead in leaps and bounds - it will be good for all of us - one man bands through to larger businesses.  It seems a focus on the "brand" is in the future - something that has been missing for some time.  Everyone belongs to different organisations for different reasons, I accept that, but surely one of the reasons for belonging to a National body is the greater good?  Regional differences are important, but not over riding.  Guess it will be a matter of watch this space.

Getting serious now :/

3 February 2015

Dear Member,

Re: Auckland Association SGM

We are writing to all our members who received notice of the Auckland Association SGM next week.
We are disappointed that the Auckland Executive, on behalf of the Auckland Association, is intent on leaving the National Association. We confirm that all current members are still part of the National Society, and we encourage you to continue to support a unified national association representing all its members.
We take issue with the Auckland Executive’s description of events to date and intend holding regional meetings in the greater Auckland area to explain the situation to date.

The Board has made every effort to accommodate the Auckland Executive, but it cannot allow the actions of a small group to scuttle proposals supported by the other 14 Associations and compromise the interests of our 630 members, including its Auckland members. Those proposals will benefit all members, in Auckland and around the country, and have been misrepresented in the communications from the Auckland Executive. We would also note that they are “proposals” and in our normal democratic process, we have submitted those proposals as remits to the AGM. The Association representatives will decide at the AGM on acceptance or not of those proposals.

The Auckland Association has no ability to offer use of the Master Plumbers brand, logo or a Master Plumber guarantee.
We would like to reassure all current members that for the time being you remain members of the National Society and we are committed to serving you.

We are aware the Auckland Association is encouraging members to withhold payment of their fees. Doing so means you will no longer be a financial member and no longer entitled to the benefits of membership.
While your membership and fees are up to date you continue to receive all the benefits of membership of the National Association, including:

 Use of the Master Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers brand
 Master Plumbers Guarantee for residential clients
P a g e | 2
 Public liability cover for your business, vans and tools
 Member rewards for savings on fuel, phones, equipment hire, safety gear and more
 Quality assurance programme to help you reach the highest standards of compliance
 Access to accredited CPD courses and workplace health and safety training
 Secured funding for industry training
 Business resources to help keep you running
 Industry representation to protect your interests in the wider building and construction industry, with the ability to directly access Government.
 NZ Plumber bimonthly magazine
 Annual conference and trade expo

You’ll continue to receive all of these current benefits while you remain a member of the National Association.
If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours sincerely,
John Leen

Wow!  So you are a member of Auckland - so what's your take on this?  Sounds like it's heating up alright.

MP is part of our branding. Vans, shirts, brochures, websites etc.. Dont really have much choice at the moment. I hope they can finally sort this out and unite!

Hey guys you have seen my case...... same crew hounded me out of MP and some were/are part of the Board, the leadership needs refreshing, in both instances.

I would be happy to talk to Auckland MP, as you all know I WAS a past president of Nelson.

If these bullies are prepared to do what they did to me (a past president) then every single member should know it could well happen to them, they did to me totally in the face of their own MP rules, I even brought these MP rules up at my hearings.

You've seen the names at my hearings. Just plain wrong.

You can't choose who you are.....but you are the sum of your choices.......

We have been approached by the break away Auckland group to attend a course and membership evening. Is there anything I should know before I go?

So what are they branding themselves?  Do you have to join to attend?  Wondering what the mood is like of the Master Plumber members up that way.  it must be confusing as hell.  I guess it will all come out in the wash in so far as membership fees are due and those that pay will be members, those that don't won't.  How did it go anyway?
