Its a new install, low risk.....so have I got this right.......a cert has been issued, printed straight off the fitters photo copier and not registered anywhere official?

You can't choose who you are.....but you are the sum of your choices.......

Not sure if a cert exists, I assume so as this is a new shop. The owner wont say who or what.. What can you do.

If you report it, ESS wnt go unless you can tell them who did the work. Its a very poor response to what could be serious.  IMO.

Only interested if its immediately dangerous, not potentially dangerous......and if you fix it and its not dangerous any more, no one gives a flying feck....

AND if it does blow up.....and it suits them......you can get framed for it........

I think that when there was mutual trust and respect within the trade and between the Board..... then there was a mutual pride in the trade and respect for the Board......but someone decided that we can't be trusted nor respected, so they could sell us CPD and several licences, basically selling our trade back to us.......then the trust went out the window along with the pride and respect......all done for "mo" money, its like the soul of the trade has been sold out from under us.

Deregulation is a huge mistake, self certification is an even bigger mistake, self certification with no official cert register....just plain mental..... running it badly and corruptly......its just totally f****ed up....the same people who lobbied for deregulation, self certification and CPD.......is the same bent people who are willing to cover up and risk the public's health....AND totally cocked up the Cert register.

You only have to look who are reaping the rewards to see who sold their souls.

I would pick pride, respect and trust over money every time.......I have proven this.... loosing everything on principle, while these goons who have sold out....well they got the coin and are taking it from you regularly.....at the risk of the public.....

Remind me again why we fund this and follow these people?

To be fair the "new" cert system was the brain child of MBIE - not the PGDB.  I don't think there is a single gasfitter in New Zealand who thinks the new cert system is a winner - we can all see the gaping holes in it.  We can see that there is no central register anymore of gas work performed.   There is no central place for potential home purchasers to check if their house has been certified, there is no place for insurers to check if the job at a house was certified, there is no place for warranty agents to check.  If it was a new house install then you rely on the consumer to be able to produce the gas certificate.  The move to the ESS certification scheme has to be one of the dumbest things that has happened to the gasfitting industry in our life time.  I wonder how long it will take to turn the wheel back.  When all said and done the old system, while not perfect, was a hell of a lot better than what we have.  Comments from the industry have fallen on deaf ears.  The scary thing is the project leader for the new cert system is also project leading some other major reforms in our industry, including looking at the 2006 Act   :'(

i completely agree with you Jaxcat, i had also herd a whisper that gas fitters were not lodging high risk work on ess web site, which i beleave would be happening,as there is no way ess would know any thing of the work being done.
just a real shame that common sense has not prevailed. :-[

Common sense is a word i have been hearing a lot lately and after doing Confined spaces and Working at heights courses common sense was mentioned quite a lot by fellow participants.
Sorry to say that common sense no longer exists. no longer do the majority of people have sense and there fore sense is no longer common.
you can make something idiot proof and along will come a better idiot and climb the barrier unlock the guard and stick his/her fingers into the wizzy bits and off to court you go.
I am becoming worried as to what the future will hold for us with the cotton wool approach there will be so many health and Safety specialists  with nothing to do because you will not be able to do any work at all.
