GMS and Heatpump locations
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:01:20 PM »
Just wondering how other gasfitters are treating situations where they come across heatpumps installed close to the GMS?  How are you interpreting this situation in terms of 5261:2003?  Would be very interested to hear feedback about this.

hi guys/jax, i guess as long as they were in before the heat pump boys they say nothing the certificate will prove who was in the wrong so just wait for a problem. All the regulating cannot stop problems caused by someone else, we as tradesmen bear the brunt of idiots who know no better so they come down on us even harder, i was changing a hot water cylinder in a fish&chip shop recently and came across this, have a look at the pics, what can you do?

Hi Robbo at least you could send a report to ESS with there online report form and save yourself a copy then if anything does happen you as the last tradesman there have a paper trail that you did something.  :) As we all know its all about covering your ass  ;D ;D with anything that might come to the boards attention.

Also have a look at this photo which we reported to ESS and we ended the saga with the heat pump installer having to move the heat pump
Unless the moral improves the floggings will continue

The problem Robbo is if for any reason you are called back to property to turn the gas back on - then you need to make a call as to the safety and legality of a heatpump too close to the GMS.  The outside unit has a compressor and therefore could be considered a potential source of ignition - all based from the measurement of the vent (5261).  In this case you shouldn't turn in back on if it's too close and you have to report it to ESS on the form on their website.  None of this will be speedy and the gasfitter will be left, as usual, standing alone.  Once you've seen it you don't have the luxury of walking away and pretending you don't know.

hi guys/jax, yes i do understand the problems us gasfitters can get into but with the govening body`s of our industry breaking the law and throwing their hands up at important issues, why can`t we do the same with statements like:- We are looking into this and the timeframe for this report is eighteen months, I say "Practice what you preach or don`t preach" cheers

Hi guys as gas fitters/engineers
We have set an example to the board and our customers this will sometimes incur costs on us but we are the experts and have to be seen to be
I recently found a dangerous installation and immediately turned off and isolated and informed the installer who was not very happy
I have to say he never reported me for disconnecting the appliance  and after thinking about further he came and thanked and even offered me a job but can only work for myself jd
