Another jaw dropper
« on: May 04, 2015, 06:10:32 PM »
Hi all, today i was approached by a builder who has an involvement with a bush hut that has been built somewhere in the middle of the bush.

He wouldn't tell me were it was, but he had a picture to show me and a question to ask.

The story went, like this, "i got to the hut to find there was no gas left in the 2x9kg LPG bottles, luckily i had taken a full one with me, so i hooked it up and everything worked including the Bosch water heater and cooker.
in the middle of the night i was woken by a hissing noise and went out to find the gas pipe leaking gas at a very high rate"  ???

He then hands me a A4 picture of the external wall of the hut with a nice new Bosch water heater and 2 x 9 kg LPG bottles and a auto switch over regulator right next to the water heater, off the bottom of the reg was a condensate drain (good big tick) and a test point(another tick) then a crox nut ! 500mm of 15 copper another crox nut ! a brass tee with a crox nut and 15 copper up into a ball valve to the water heater.
Back at that brass tee i could see a Bosch frost protection valve screwed into the tee!!! ???
which during the night would have opened and dumped all the gas from the bottle!
i couldn't be leave my eyes!! someone was thick enough to put a frost protection valve into a gas line... someone who croxs gas pipes!
maybe even someone who has walked into a plumbing shop and bought these fittings off the shelf ??

When i asked who  had done this work he said he didn't know but would find out for me.
I told him that it was very dangerous and needed to be reported.
i will wait and see what comes of it, clearly it was not a gas fitter who did this work.

What this shows is that nothing is being done about the public's access to gas equipment and fittings that they really should not be allowed to purchase.

i think this is what the pgdb should be doing some thing about!

If i have to pay the pgdb a fee to protect the public  then all merchants should too !

It should be illegal to sell gas fittings and plumbing fittings to anyone who DOESNT have the card !

I believe in doing a job once and right. !

I agree. I can't understand why our merchants can sell any gas related material to any person outside of a Account Verified Certified Gasfitter. We have similar issues in the Coromandel, the DIY weekenders, or the plumber under the radar. I think it is about time this process should be corrected, and it would not be that hard to implement.

Hi Guys

Don't worry the PGDB has Plumbing World and DIY advertising "ask for the card" so that after they sell the gear to the customer they remind them to as for the tradesman's card if they get one to do the job.  Isn't the chairman of the PGDB also on the Plumbing World Board?

This whole "tell the consumer" about the card is a waste of time. They shouldn't sell gasfitting gear to the public full stop! If they were really interested in protecting the public that's what they would do. I came across a guy just today (local gas station) looked at my van and said.. "Oh you're a plumber, you guys charge so much, I ended up converting to gas water myself, I used to be a plumber in Yugoslavia bla bla bla...." I asked, are you licensed? "no" did you do gas before? "no, but its easy!"  ??? Where's the PGDB police when you need them? I had to shake my head and just walk away. Lucky for him I didn't know his name or where he lived!
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

i completely agree Plumber, and it would be easy for the merchants to simply ask to see your card BEORE a sale.

one of the big ones i see selling gas fittings is Trade me.
No way should gas regulators and fittings be on that site at all, there isnt even a warning in place to reminded joe public that it is illegal to do this work.
So come on pgdb do your job ! a poster in each plumbing world isnt enough !

Can I just add that, from what I've seen in the general Auckland area, the amount of dodgy / disgraceful gas installations. I see them all the time, not too hard to spot. It is not regulated enough. Simply, Ive been in merchants seeing fish and chip owners buying gas equipment, no problem. So I think the message is not getting through. For the masses a lot of potentially dangerous jobs slip through, and yes, we can all sit down and read the back page of the Plumbers Journal to see the one or two that have been caught, weather its illegal sanitary or gas work. But you start to understand why so many practitioners get ticked off paying annual licensing fees, when you have the likes of "Johno aka Gasfitter…..aka Pro Diy"er, who's more than happy to whack in an infinity or two for a box of beers on the weekend….now thats bullshit.

I also think that the likes of Bunnings and Mitre 10 Mega, aren't helping the public safety…..I was in one store last weekend and overheard a bloke asking about an Instantaneous "what one does the gas go into and ill just get some hose"?" ??? wtf……..

Just my rant

The explosion that they set me up for, and have covered up since....

Well it was old style butchers shop with large plate glass windows, changed over to a chip shop...

It exploded after 9 in the morning on a school day....

1 hour earlier and it would have been swarming with school kids, going to the dairy next door and queuing for the school bus...

How it put just one person in intensive care, not killing any one or injuring anyone else astounds me, one hour earlier it would have been horrendous.

The Board covered it up as the poor bastard was in the burns unit in Wellington.
You can't choose who you are.....but you are the sum of your choices.......

Bugman, I wish you were right.  A woman was killed in Ruakaka because of DIY and the PGDB has done NOTHING to prevent sales of gas (or plumbing) materials to licensed tradesmen, nor have they done anything to make the public aware of the dangers casued by DIY etc etc etc.  Ask for the Card is the most useless campaign ever by any company

I am pretty sure the Chair of the Plumbers Board is also on a Board for a merchants assoc.......

And this is why the NZ Law Commission says that all industry Boards should be free of industry groups....
