It seems our industry is plagued by self interests. Everyone wants their self interests met first before others or before the needs of the industry. Too much wheeling and dealing to find happy mediums instead of doing what is absolutely best for the industry.

So does the industry put up with the status quo or do we push for qualifications that assist and promote the industry?” The Federation believes change is needed. Have your say.

hi guys, in the latest `Fellow Practitioner` today (To approach the TEC Minister and tell him Government is wasting money on a lengthened pre-trade – and that polytechs are not delivering what industry wants), needs.
..Isn't this why Finance Minister Cullen sacked the entire Board back in the 90s? What has been learnt?  cheers

Robbo the PGDB have no say over training - if you hark back to the Armstrong Report - the PGDB were told in no uncertain terms that their mandate was not to get involved in training - it was the preserve of the ITO.  Back then we have the PGDRITO (Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying and Roofing ITO).  Steven Joyce decided we had too many ITO's and a whole lot had to merge.  Our ITO chose to go with Skills - and now we sit along side sparkies, Bank Security people, and heaps of other unrelated industries.  Worse decision ever.  Our ITO is not keeping control of the Polytecs who are simply contracted to deliver what Skills ask them.  Skills is charged to deliver what industry wants.  Does it?  Well I don't think so.  I think a six month pretrade is one of the most ridiculous wastes of money I have ever heard of.  If employers got this money to help subsidise taking on apprentices and meeting their set up costs that would be a far greater use.  I think this newsletter encapsulates the issues perfectly.  Issues we see everyday.

Actually if I can just expand - I mean the PGDB are not involved in apprentice training.  That is separate to upskilling for competency.

Last night on the news the Prime Minister said there was plenty of money for training apprentices.  Well I've got a deal for him - I've got three apprentices so how about he pays back the $36,000 I've had to pay to train apprentices for him.

hi guys, however the new govt spin it lets hope they return the trades that we are in back to a proper apprenticeship so after that we will all be able to carry out our work as fully certified trades people, if that does not happen a continuing amount of people will be leaving and finding something else to do that does not involve compliance after compliance to stress and drive them mad, cheers
